Customer Overview

Hospitality Sector: £30,000 budget for a 60-room, 4-star hotel in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey.

Technology

Directional high-gain, high-power antennas with line-of-sight placement on tower blocks. Locusworld mesh technology. 10 access points, repeaters, and structured cabling.

Challenge

To upgrade the network infrastructure to enable a single cable to carry data, voice, and video to each hotel room. The project involved two sites: one newly built and one with existing infrastructure. Guest WiFi was required in all existing hotel rooms, as previous poor connectivity had led to negative Google and TripAdvisor reviews.

Solution

A complete network design, deployment, and cable migration was delivered using G-PON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology. The solution included installation of new Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches and routers, integrated with the existing VoIP system. The new building was future-proofed with a 1 Gigabit fibre-based WiFi network, while cable runs were minimised. A G-PON infrastructure was installed in the new building. In the existing building, mesh WiFi was deployed using 9 repeaters on existing cable runs, with a gateway repeater powered only to repeat the WiFi signal.

Results

A hybrid solution delivered significant cost savings by reducing new cabling requirements, while providing a future-proof fibre connection to each room.
